Hexmag Re-Innovates The AR-15/M16 Platform Magazine Line

Hexmag

Hexmag, maker of the innovative Hexmag line of AR-15/M-16 platform magazines, has created a unique, patented, tough, reliable magazine with some distinctive features and industry-first designs at a low-tech price. It all started in 2013 in Loveland, Colorado, when Aaron Schefter looked over the various AR magazines on the market and thought he could do better. Joining forces with George Brown (now President), Schefter began experimenting with various mold configurations and polymer compounds.

He modified various designs for some time and eventually arrived at a design that delivered form and function with a unique set of features needed for a state-of-the-art magazine.

To get a magazine to correctly lock up tightly in the firearm, feed reliably and add additional desired features such as a sturdy and functional slot for reliably charging the magazine from 10-round strippers was a real trick. The Hexmag duo worked through countless hours of design iterations and composite parings to get it to do all of this and operate correctly.

The Hexmag addresses several common issues.

Tipping, the condition that creates this problem came about originally with military metal magazines and then progressed to synthetic magazines, was solved by adding longer anti-tilt “legs.” The duo also decided to make the base plate locking button the same color as the follow, creating a selection of accessory follower and magazine floorplate colors to indicate type of ammunition such as tracer, ball, incendiary, hunting and even bullet weight and caliber. Even better, since the magazines also fit and feed the .300AAC Blackout, .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf rounds, it’s now easy to quickly know what caliber or load you have in the magazine.

Schefter and Brown saw numerous plastic and metal magazines across the board, none of which were durable. They decided on a proprietary, lightweight, fiber-reinforced polymer for theirs, naming it PolyyHex2 Advanced Composite. They also decided on high-tinsel strength stainless steel springs with an expainded metal memory, which is what’s used by law enforcement and military.

By Winter 2014, the modifying, tuning and testing were all completed and orders came quickly in the AR/M16 market. Less than two years later, a Series 2 magazine was releases, including numerous alterations.

Series 2 is a premium magazine that one could drive a heavy vehicle over (who does that in the real world?). It works incredibly well in many ways such as functioning the likes of .300 AAC Blackout, .458 SOCOM, and .50 Beowulf rounds and yet is easy to disassemble for cleaning and utilizes their patented unique HexID color coding features.

gun cleaning

Tetra Gun has released two new products for gun cleaning. The additions to Tetra’s gun-care chemical line are the Synthetic-Safe Triple Action spray and Dry Finish Lubricant.

“Tetra Gun care’s new Dry Finish Lubricant formula performs exceptionally well for gun cleaning. It fills another niche need for our customers,” FTI, Inc. General Manager Greg Cohen said in a press release. “For those shooting in dusty, sandy conditions, Tetra Gun Dry Finish Lubricant will offer excellent performance and reliable operation.

Dry Finish Lubricant is applied wet then sets to a dry-like feel that is less likely to attract buildup. Synthetic-Safe Triple Action spray is an aerosol product that cleans then evaporates. It leaves only a light lubricant coating on gun metals.

Coming In 2017

New from Tetra Gun for 2017 is the Bore Boar bore cleaning rope and original Tetra Gun Grease in a 1-pound jar and the “green” Cleaner Degreaser in a 1-gallon jug.

“On the accessory side,” Cohen said, “the new Tetra Gun 3-Piece Wire Twist brush set makes for a great addition to any handgun owner’s range bag, with scrubbing action for .22-caliber, 9mm and .45-caliber sizes.

Q&A With Crimson Trace President Lane Tobiassen

crimson trace

Crimson Trace has been a market leader for more than 20 years in consumer, military and law enforcement laser-sighting optics. It delivers approximately $44 Million in yearly revenue for the company. With more than 200 products, Crimson Trace is widely recognized as the world’s leading laser sight brand. The company has developed award-winning innovations including the Lasergrip, Laserguard, Defender Series, new LiNQ wireless activation system and Rail Master platforms.

The company maintains a product development team that has an established track record of launching high-quality, innovative laser-sighting products. Crimson Trace has earned the trust of large and small retailers with its product assortment, quality, service and margins. There are now hundreds of independent retailers selling Crimson Trace products.

As a laser-sighting company, there is a need to make products for more than one brand. Crimson Trace answers that call with models designed specifically for 20 firearms manufacturers with hundreds of models to choose from. And also the universal fit models add fitment to hundreds of additional models. Their OEM partnerships have been strong with many companies, however with 25 percent of its overall revenue coming from Smith & Wesson (S&W) related sales, a relationship with S&W has an already proven track record. This year Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation made that relationship permanent with its purchase and acquisition of Crimson Trace. Crimson Trace appears to be an excellent acquisition target for S&W with organically generated 10-year compound annual revenue growth rate in excess of 10 percent.

crimson trace

James Debney, Smith & Wesson President and Chief Executive Officer, said, “As the undisputed leader in the market for laser sighting products, Crimson Trace serves as an ideal platform for our new Electro-Optics Division. Firearms purchasers frequently buy electro-optic accessories to enhance the capabilities and performance of their firearms. The growth that Crimson Trace has delivered is a testament to the high product quality and the robust product development capability that Lane Tobiassen and his team have established. That capability, combined with Crimson Trace’s leadership position in the market, provides a solid framework for organic and inorganic growth.”

The market takes notice of these types of acquisitions simply because, in this example, the other 75 percent of Crimson Trace’s revenue is derived from products developed for other non-S&W brands like H&K, Glock, Kahr and others. The industry wants to understand how this acquisition will change how retailers, distributors and other firearms manufacturers work with Crimson Trace now under the S&W umbrella. Another acquisition should not be surprising since S&W has been acquiring companies for some time and currently owns S&W, Thompson Center, Taylor Brands and Battenfeld Technologies. Shooting Sports Retailer had an opportunity to interview Lane Tobiassen, President of Crimson Trace and the newly appointed the President of the new Electro-Optics Division of Smith & Wesson, to understand his strategy going forward for Crimson Trace and the new division.

SSR: The expectation is that things change each time a company is purchased by a firearms conglomerate. How will the overall marketing strategy of Crimson Trace change for retailers and distributors under the S&W brand?

Tobiaseen: S&W is an incredible brand with vast and deep customer support capabilities which we plan to leverage. Crimson Trace is now the foundation and focal point of the electro-optics division of S&W, but Crimson Trace will continue to go forward (with support) just as we have also have. We have over 2000 retail customers of all sizes and still have the same field strategy and resources. Our retailers, distributors and OEM partners can expect that support will not change from a subtraction of product support but actually should see an increase of support through the capabilities now available with S&W.

SSR: Will the Crimson Trace management team, workforce and operations remain in Wilsonville, Oregon?

Tobiassen: Yes, the plan is to continue the operation in Wilsonville, Oregon. There are no plans at all to move the operations.  We have some highly trained assembly workers which are dedicated to assembly. Under S&W, we do have some shared services components such as finance, HR and IT support which we will integrate into the Crimson Trace infrastructure.

SSR: Can you elaborate on what the market can expect would change with your OEM relationships and/or competitive (non-S&W) pistol models?

Tobiassen: S&W was an OEM customer prior to the acquisition, however we have 50 other OEM SKUs (stock keeping units) of other non-S&W manufacturer focused products, and we are committed to grow and continue to pursue these opportunities. S&W was strongly in support of continual growth of these relationships and models. A significant percentage of our growth is with new products and the expectation is that those products should serve more than just Smith & Wesson’s markets. We introduced the LinQ. It’s the first wireless laser-sighting system that is applicable to any AR platform. That type of innovation will definitely continue into the future product beyond S&W branded firearms.

SSR: It was noted that you would become the President of the new Electro-Optics Division of Smith & Wesson. As the new Electro-
Optics President, would you like to see S&W expand beyond laser-based optics to other types of optics?

Tobiassen: Certainly. The long-term strategy is to expand far beyond just laser optics. Expansion of the product line was the very reason why an electro-optics division was created. The S&W strategy is to identify complementary products to the S&W core business. Crimson Trace was the first of those products identified and ultimately acquired. Due to the large percentage of shared business the fit between our companies was natural. However, there are many more products on the market that fit into that mindset. The vision for the electro-optics business is beyond just Crimson Trace’s existing laser sighting. It’ll include electric, laser, tritium, scope, magnifiers, rangefinders, integrated systems, night vision and thermal. Some of that growth will be organic and some of that will be in-organic acquisitions of other companies.

LG-660_M&P_classicThe future growth piece is something we are very excited about. The acquisition is the start of something which we will continue to grow on as we identify and develop new market opportunities. The growth will not be immediate into those other markets. Right now the focus is on lights and lasers, but we will look for opportunities to expand beyond that. S&W has a growing portfolio of the brands which it rigorously strives to preserve. Very deliberately, the expansion of the electro-optics division model requires the right execution and timing. We will do it in the right way and do it at the right time.

SSR: What types of resources does the Crimson Trace team now have available as part of the S&W team?

Tobiassen: S&W is an enormously powerful brand with so many marketing, sales and support opportunities. Our existing resources will stay in place; however, we can draft off of being associated with an expansively connected company. Being directly integrated into S&W infrastructure is not something Crimson Trace had access to before the acquisition.

SSR: Crimson Trace had a strong marketing presence before the acquisition. How will that change?

Tobiassen: Crimson Trace was already executing at a high level from a marketing perspective before the execution. We don’t see there was a lot of unmet opportunity that we were missing with the capabilities he had available, but under the S&W umbrella we have plans to expand and build on that.

SSR: Is there anything you specifically want retailers, distributors and other manufacturers to know?

Tobiassen: Crimson Trace was established over 20 years ago, we continue to want people understand there is high continuity of the Crimson Trace line and support which S&W and my team are dedicated to continue to expand. Our commitment is to continue to support all our customers without interruption.

Final Thoughts

One of the prominent points during the interview was how important and strategic S&W considered the
Crimson Trace acquisition.

Unlike many purchased companies who are simply rolled up into a holding company, S&W has created an entirely new electro-optics division to further expand beyond Crimson Trace’s current product line.

Beyond the other previous S&W acquisitions, retailers should expect that S&W’s catalog may be significantly bigger in the coming years.

8 Suppressors to Check Out in 2017

best new suppressors

The Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas drew more than 65,000 attendees to look at new products. Suppressors have been very popular in recent years as the Hollywood mystique has started to give way to reality. Firearm suppressors are going mainstream and represent one of the fastest growing accessory segments in the firearms market. Retailer margins are healthy because demand is so strong. This condition should persist with or without the passage of the Hearing Protection Act. Here are some new suppressors that have been or will be introduced this year.

1. Silencerco Maxim 9

Photo: Silencerco

Silencerco stunned the firearms world last year with its integrally suppressed 9mm pistol, the Maxim 9. Last year at SHOT the Maxim 9 was still in development. This year it moves to production and is sure to have ridiculously high demand. Silencerco had some Maxim 9s available to try out at Industry Day at SHOT and this writer indulged. The Maxim 9 is a stunning piece of engineering. It is well balanced and very, very quiet (hearing safe). It ships in the long configuration, but the user may remove two sections of the suppressor to shorten the overall length by about 2 inches. The price point is very reasonable considering what it costs to buy a good pistol and a great suppressor to go with it. www.silencerco.com
•    MSRP: $1,499
•    Length: 10¾ inches in long configuration
•    Diameter: 1.58×5.41 inches
•    Weight: 2 pounds, 7 ounces
•    Rated: 9mm semi-auto
•    Other: May be shortened by more than an inch

From the April issue

From the April issue

2. StingerWorx

Photo: StingerWorx.com

StingerWorx is a new entrant to the suppressor world, but it sure looks to be headed in the right direction. It is a direct-to-retailer manufacturer, which creates good margin opportunities. The Emperor suppressors are hearing safe, full-auto rated and very lightweight. The secret is StingerWorx’s patent-pending titanium blast chamber design. The design directs gasses to two chambers and eliminates the need for heavier materials in the blast chamber. The Emperor 556-L2 has a MAP of $975 at 30 percent margin. The company has a unique production bonus program for top sales people. Contact jason@stingerworx.com for dealer inquiries.

  • MSRP: $975 with OBX
  • Baffle stack: Titanium
  • Length: 7½ inches
  • Weight: 12.8 to 16.7 ounces with OBX
  • Diameter: 1¾ to 1½ inches
  • Blast baffle: Titanium
  • Rated: full auto .223/5.56 >=10½-inch barrel
  • Other: Replaceable baffle stack

3. Alphadog

Prior to the Alphadog Alpha 9, no one had thought of hanging anything from a suppressor. The device is a sound dampener after all, not a place to put accessories. Alphadog has challenged that thinking by integrating a rail onto the outside of the Alpha series suppressor tubes. This does a few things.

Photo: Alphadog

First, the extra metal acts as both a heat sink and a high-surface-area heat dissipater. Second, unobstructed sights are part of the rail design, so there is no need to get special suppressor height sights when using an Alphadog. Third, the rail offers the flexibility to add a laser, red dot or light directly to the suppressor. The rail can be clocked to any index point. Alphadog’s design created quite a stir at SHOT 2017, and from the looks of things they will be disrupting the industry for a while. www.alphadogsilencers.com

  • MSRP: $775 with piston
  • Baffle stack: 7075 T6 Aluminum
  • Length: 7½ inches
  • Weight: 10.2 ounces
  • Diameter: 1¾ inches
  • Blast baffle: 17-4 Stainless
  • Rated: Semi-auto pistol
  • Other: 124 dB dry with 147-grain Rem HTP

4. Yankee Hill Machine

YHM has been making great suppressors for quite a while. This year YHM showcased the new Turbo 5.56 suppressor. It’s a tubeless design, making it lightweight and not bulky.

Photo: YHM

The Turbo sounded very good at the SHOT Show Industry Day at the range. What was most impressive was the complete lack of gas in the user’s face. It uses a simple quick detach system and comes with one QD brake. More brakes may be purchased to enable use of the suppressor on multiple hosts. www.yhm.net

  • MSRP: $489 with QD brake
  • Baffle stack: 17-4 stainless
  • Length: 6½ inches
  • Weight: 13½ ounces
  • Diameter: 1.5625 inches
  • Blast baffle: 718 Inconel

  • Other: 134 dB on 14½-inch barrel with 55-grain ammo

5. Gemtech

The Integra by Gemtech is an integrally suppressed complete upper, which gives users the advantages of a suppressed SPR with just one NFA stamp. Gemtech starts with a 10½-inch barrel and permanently attaches a suppressor tube that takes the overall barrel length to 16.1 inches per NFA/ATF standards. This eliminates the need for the SBR stamp, but a stamp is still required for the unit as it is suppressed. The G-CORE technology baffle stack is user serviceable, removable and replaceable as needs arise. There is also an integrated flash hider. The Integra upper feels great in hand and is very well balanced. The Gemtech/Nemo Arms patented gas block reduces blowback, which eliminates the number one disadvantage of using a suppressor (except the wait time). The Integra is available now exclusively through the Silencer Shop in either 5.56 or 300 BLK. www.gemtech.com

  • MSRP: $1,999
  • Baffle stack: 6AL4V Titanium
  • Length: 16.1 inches barrel for NFA purposes
  • Weight: N/A
  • Diameter: N/A, fits under included handguard
  • Blast baffle: 6AL4V Titanium
  • Rated: Semi-auto
  • Other: 131 dB at shooter’s ear

6. Griffin Armament

Photo: Griffin

Griffin Armament brought a big silencer that weighs very little to the SHOT show this year. The Sportsman Ultralight is designed for a .338 Lapua round with hunters in mind. This suppressor is not intended for full-auto or long-shot strings, but hunters using a .338 would not be doing so anyway. It uses the Griffin taper mount attachment mechanism. It is made from 7075 billet aluminum with two stainless baffles up front and 7075 baffles after that to keep weight to a minimum. These units are being made now, and will be available in the second quarter of 2017. www.griffinarmament.com

  • MSRP: $995
  • Baffle stack: 7075 billet aluminum
  • Length: 8¾ inches
  • Weight: 12.7 ounces
  • Diameter: 1½ inches
  • Blast baffle: 17-4 stainless (2)
  • Rated: .338 slow fire
  • Other: 136 dB at the shooter’s ear on .338 rifle

7. SIG Sauer

Sig Sauer last year was one of the more mainstream companies to start manufacturing and selling suppressors.

Photo: Sig Sauer

SIG made a big splash with some great offerings in 7.62 and 5.56. This year, SIG debuts the SRD22X which is .22LR, .22 magnum and 17HMR rated. The SRD uses a Grade 9 Titanium tube and 17-4 stainless heat treated shielded baffles. The SRD22X is available now to dealers. www.sigsauer.com

  • MSRP: $445
  • Baffle stack: 17-4 stainless
  • Length: 5.8 inches

  • Diameter: 1 inch
  • Blast baffle: 17-4 stainless
  • Rated: .22LR, .22 mag, .17HMR
  • Other: ½”-28 direct thread

8. Dead Air Armament

Photo: Dead Air Armament

Dead Air frequently delivers great suppressors to the market, and this year was no different. The Wolverine PBS-1 is a suppressor designed for the ubiquitous AK. The AR market may be huge, but AK fans are a loyal bunch. Nearly all silencer manufacturers have stayed away from the AK platform, but not Dead Air. The PBS-1 is optimized around minimal back pressure and sound reduction. It was a joy to shoot at the SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range. At just under 2 pounds, it is kind of a beast, but it has a big job to do! With a loaded magazine the AK at the range felt surprisingly well balanced with the Wolverine attached. One look at the Wolverine and AK users will want to know more. www.deadairsilencers.com

  • MSRP: $1,099
  • Length: 7.4 inches with thread adapter
  • Weight: 22 oz on average (+/- 2 oz depending on mount)
  • Diameter: 1½-inch tube, 1.93 inch near mount
  • Blast baffle: 17-4 stainless

SABRE Charges Forward to Bring Transparency to Stun Gun Industry

SABRE, the leading self-defense brand trusted by police and consumers worldwide, is launching a national campaign to educate consumers on stun guns and how they can protect themselves from misleading information.

Stun guns are a popular, non-lethal means of self-defense on the market. They can slow or stop an assailant instantly, giving their users precious minutes to escape and find help.

Unfortunately, the stun gun market is completely unregulated, allowing outrageous marketing claims to go unchecked.

SABRE CEO/VP of Sales & Marketing David Nance and his team of personal safety experts launched the campaign due to the astronomically inflated claims some companies are making about their brands’ stun gun strength. The team felt consumers needed to understand what exactly it was they were purchasing.

“Stun gun voltage is one of the biggest and most dangerous myths in personal safety,” said Nance. “The false claims these companies are making about the strength of their guns may give people a false sense of security.”

SABRE has released a video to help consumers understand the facts about stun guns and to be aware of the false claims other companies are making (Stun Guns and the Voltage Myth).

“Exaggerated voltage claims, ranging up to even 300 million volts, sound impressive, but are simply not possible, let alone true. The maximum voltage that can jump across the average sized stun gun’s contacts is only 30,000 volts. Any guns claiming more than that are defying the laws of physics,” said Nance.

Nance states that according to a United States Department of Justice / National Institute of Justice report, when it comes to stun guns, voltage is only one part of the equation–and a small one at that. The DOJ report stated that “delivered charge is best indicator of electrostimulation.1

“What really makes a stun gun effective is the strength of its charge (measured in microcoulombs – µc). A stun gun with a rating of 0.5-1.0 µc will produce pain, while one with a charge of 1.0 µc or greater produces unbearable pain—and therefore, greater protective power. SABRE® Stun Guns provide this advanced level of charge.” Nance continued.

SABRE stun guns are manufactured to be as effective and powerful as possible and have been tested by Rassettica, North America’s leading testing company, to provide peace of mind to consumers.

“We have an obligation to consumers to make sure they know what they are purchasing when it comes to stun guns,” said Nance. “Knowledge is power.”

Review: HexMag Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip

hexmag Advanced tactical 3-position grip

Eugene Stoner’s AR-15/M-16 family of firearms are some of the most modular in the world. The same receiver can transform from a semi-automatic carbine into a light machine gun, sub-machine gun, sniper rifle, shotgun or even a shoulder-fired soda can launcher! On a more granular level, the AR-15 allows shooters access to a staggeringly large array of aftermarket parts and accessories.

That’s not just the obviously upgradable portions, either. Internal components like extractors, seers, trigger assembles and even triggerguards have dozens of replacement options available for the firearm. Yet, despite having this seemingly endless selection of components, one aspect of the gun’s design is often overlooked: user-configurable ergonomics.

From our June issue

Sure, the telescopic stock on the M4 can be adjusted to varying lengths, and precision rifle stocks with adjustable cheek rests also exist. But what about the lowly grip?
Since the rifle’s inception, shooters needed to decide on a single grip type and angle with any product they purchased — until now.

Up-and-coming magazine-maker HexMag has introduced a new pistol grip for the AR-15/M-16 that enables the user to adjust the angle the grip interfaces with the receiver itself. Why? Because one grip angle doesn’t rule them all.

Certain guns, like personal-defense weapons (PDW), are designed to be compact and easily accessible within the confines of an armed vehicle. A long, traditionally angled pistol grip doesn’t really make since for them. This is because within those confines, a shooter will often have the gun’s stock fully collapsed, thus the gun will be very close to their body.

This same phenomenon occurs when a shooter is wearing bulky equipment or body armor. The added girth to the shooter’s frame makes a fully extended stock impractical and impedes good form which in turn reduces shooter accuracy and effective range.

That brings us to the first selectable angle on the HexMag Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip — 17 degrees. This first stop is indicated on the grip by the first line below the backstrap, and it feels like the most radical departure from traditional grip angles. In truth, the very steep (or shallow depending on your point of view) feels almost vertical compared to the traditional AR-15 grip.

And, true to my words above, it allows the shooter to effectively reach all the controls on the receiver even when the gun is very close in. This stop is clearly designed for CQB use and would be ideal for both very short shooters and those looking for a truck gun — or something for clearing rooms on a SWAT raid.

The Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip features hexagonal cuts that can be filled with grip tape made by HexMag.

It even works really well with pistol braces for AR-15 carbines of all calibers. I installed the Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip on a test pistol from CMMG to confirm the 17-degree angle’s usefulness on such a short firearm. Since the pistol isn’t an SBR, it has an SB Tactical pistol brace installed. This improves the design’s ability to shoot in a great way. When the shooter places their arm through the brace to reach the pistol grip, they’ll immediately notice a more swept-back angle is very uncomfortable. Yet, with a more vertical grip like the 17-degree configuration, the CMMG AR-15 pistol feels more like a traditional pistol. It is much more natural to point. Additionally, shooters who like to use the brace as a cheek weld will find the grip’s steep angle much more accommodating to that method of aiming, as well, because of how close it brings the gun to a shooter’s face. I utilized both of these shooting stances when using the 9mm CMMG AR-15 pistol and I found some really interesting results.

First, the steep angle feels like it reduces the distance from the grip’s backstrap to the trigger, but it actually doesn’t. To ensure I wasn’t crazy, I brought out a few additional shooters with different sized hands than my own. A petite, 100-pound lady standing a towering 4-foot-11 and a 6-foot, 275-pound man who works construction.

The young lady has shorter, thinner fingers, while the construction worker has sausage-like thick, strong hands covered in calluses. I chose these two, because they represent opposite ends of the spectrum, while I have medium-sized hands.

I first configured the grip to 25 degrees and installed it on a Bravo Company Machine M4 clone, because this is the standard angle for M-16/AR-15 grips and a very common firearm. Both shooters were given a few minutes to familiarize themselves with the controls on the gun. They were then given two HexMag 30-round magazines full of Federal SS109 5.56mm ammunition.

The shooters were instructed to fire five rounds at a time then toggle the safety selector and switch magazines. I did this obnoxious course of fire to give both a good understanding of how it feels to reload, toggle the safety and pull the trigger with the standard grip angle.

The construction worker is a retired Marine. He immediately commented on the hexagonal patterns on the grip. While he was initially skeptical of the futuristic appearance’s functionality, he commented that it was more comfortable than he would have thought, and that it was “grippy.” This was done with the optional grip tape panels installed, which undoubtedly contributed to the “grippiniess” of the product.

Aside from that, neither shooter found the original angle to be remarkably uncomfortable or awkward.

The HexMag grip uses teeth and tension to secure itself together.

Next, I had the shooters fire the CMMG 9mm pistol with an Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip installed at the 25-degree angle. The smaller-framed female shooter didn’t seem to struggle with this configuration, but the larger guy definitely did. The proximity of the grip to his chest, made properly grasping the grip next to impossible given his frame. The only way he could do so with any semblance of good form was to ‘chicken-wing’ his shooting arm’s elbow. But because of this, the large-framed shooter was forced to use the second knuckle of his trigger finger instead of the pad or first crux. This also meant his grip was so rotated that he couldn’t reach the safety selector on the other side.

The guns were then made safe, and the grip angle changed to the steeper 11-degree setting. The female shooter noticed a small improvement, noting that her wrist was much more comfortable. The large shooter said the difference was “night and day” between the original angle and the more vertical one. He also stated the next angle made actuating the controls on the gun much easier, and even commented that the new grip angle seemed to reduce the felt recoil. This is presumably because the gun was better aligned with his forearm, so he didn’t have to rely on his wrist to soak up the recoil — which is surprisingly stout for a 9mm thanks to the gun’s direct-blowback operating principle.

What about the third option? The 33-degree configuration? This one is actually a surprise hit with both myself and the two test shooters.

When set to 33-degrees, the Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip looks and feels like the grip on the granddaddy of all assault rifles: The Sturmgewehr. The angle is conducive to shoot prone, but it’s also very natural in standing or crouched positions. This is because the angle allows the shooter’s grip canted forward, which makes them point with their shooting hand at their target — almost like the grips on shotguns or flint-lock pistols.

But enough subjective information, let’s get to the guts of this grip.

Positioning the HexMag Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip at 11 degrees is ideal for AR-15 pistols.

The engineers at HexMag ingeniously utilized the same approach from their magazines on this grip — a high-impact polymer body with hexagonal panels meant for specially cut grip tape. Also, if you’re wondering how HexMag can make the grip angle adjustable but still rugged enough for hard use, it’s actually pretty ingenious. It foregoes the one-piece design of traditional AR-15 pistol grips in lieu of a two-piece setup. Basically a tang and the pistol grip itself. The two are bound together by a screw that passes through both and into the threaded portion of the lower receiver. The screw presses them together, but what prevents them from changing angles under pressure is simply teeth.

Small 90-degree steps under the tang that interface with matching steps on the grip, provide a ton of contact between the two. When pressed together with a grip screw, the two are virtually inseparable. The testers and I confirmed with both mounting the grip on an AR-10 and firing repeatedly and by striking the grip from the back and front with a 5-pound wooden mallet.

Durability was my biggest concern. Adding extra components to such a critical component of the firearm always is. With that out of the way, I would definitely recommend this grip to anyone who wants a more adaptive option for their AR-15, or simply can’t decide between a few different angle options. Especially given its relatively low MSRP of $24.99.

Its unique design may not be for everyone, but for a shooter less concerned with traditional appearance and more so with performance and modularity, the HexMag Advanced Tactical 3-Position Grip stands above the rest.

R-SERIES Bluetooth Quad Mic

Radians, a market leader in the development and manufacturing of safety gear for shooters and hunters, has added a premium R-SERIES Bluetooth Quad Mic electronic earmuff to its hearing protection line.

According to Wes Miller, Director of Sporting Goods, “The R3700 was designed first to provide comfortable and safe hearing protection for hunters and shooters.  Integration of Bluetooth pairing capability and of improved sound enhancement technology makes the earmuffs more functional and enjoyable.”

This premium electronic earmuff with an NRR24 amplifies low level sounds so hunters and shooters can hear their surroundings in the field or hear their safety officers at the range. Advanced circuitry in the R-SERIES earmuffs compresses impulse noises (muzzle discharge) that exceed safe levels.

The Bluetooth connectivity feature works with most smart devices.  The wearer can stream content like music or podcasts.  If a smart phone is paired, but content is not streaming, wearers can hear their surroundings until an alert from the paired device arrives.  Four microphones, front and back on each cup, monitor sound from all directions providing superior sound location.  The headband is padded, adjustable, and is designed for both a secure and comfortable fit.

The R3700 includes an LED “ON” indicator light.  It helps to prevent unintentional battery discharge.  The LED shows green to indicate “On” and turns to blue when the earmuffs are paired with a compatible Bluetooth device. The unit operates on two AAA batteries (not included) providing the wearer many hours of use.

The R-SERIES Bluetooth Quad Mic (Part # R3700EECS) has a suggested MSRP of $129 and can be found at sporting goods outlets and e-commerce sites. All of Radians products are sold through authorized distributors.

For more information, visit www.radians.com or call toll-free 1-877-723-4267 to speak to a safety professional. Radians’ new products will be on display at the NBS Show in Fort Worth and at the NASGW show in San Antonio.
